FUNICULAR TRAIN

This Swiss-designed funicular, which is situated at the base of Penang Hill and operates on one of the world's oldest funicular systems, will carry you to the summit while passing through lush vegetation. A distinctive feature of the funicular is its tunnel track, which is also the steepest in the globe and the longest in Asia.

The trip only lasts 5 to 10 minutes, and it departs as early as 630AM! However, keep in mind that the queues can grow very long on weekends and during high travel demand, so we advise you to visit early or leave enough time in your schedule just in case. For those who prefer to avoid the queue, Fast Lane tickets are also offered. The summit of Penang Hill can also be reached by taking a one-hour trek or driving up a private road that is exclusively open to the vehicles of hillside inhabitants.

HISTORICAL BUILDING

Penang Hill still has numerous charming historical structures and monuments that exhibit a combination of British colonial, Asian, and modern design because it was once a well-liked haven for expatriates. On top of the hill, there are actually more than 50 historic bungalows, many of which were constructed in the 1800s as homes and resorts for important government figures, such as the Yang di-Pertuan Agung and Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, as well as foreign guests.

Embark on a historical route if you enjoy history and you'll see some opulent homes on Penang Hill. Other attractions worth seeing are the Heritage Post Box, one of Penang's oldest post boxes, which was built between 1837 and 1901 during Queen Victoria's reign, and a magnificent 32-Pounder Cannon that weighs 2.75 tonnes (2,500 kg!). On Penang Hill, there are other places of worship, such as a mosque and a Hindu temple.
